Enrichment &
Extra-Curricular Activities

Students at Belfairs Academy are assigned to a college on entry into the Academy. The college system promotes healthy competition, the meeting and mixing of students across different subject areas, and the sharing of non-academic interests, sporting challenges, and a vast array of activities to suit all interests.

As well as being members of a college family within the Academy we also encourage our students to engage in activities outside the Academy. We have become an important part of our local community and have worked hard to foster positive and productive relationships with a network of businesses, schools, and Universities for the benefit of our students. As the Academy grows, we will expand these links and develop further opportunities to raise achievement, student aspiration and access to the world of work and higher education.

Parents and other community leaders are actively encouraged to fully support and play their part in reinforcing the ethos, values and high expectations of the Academy and to become involved in the life of the Academy in a variety of ways.

Students can earn value points for their college, through demonstrating our academy’s core value’s (Commitment, Respect, Excellence, Self-Belief and Strength) in their learning.

Jack Petchey was an East End entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is 97 years old and his is a real ‘rags to riches’ story. He was born into a poor working class family in the East End in 1925 and left school with no qualifications at age 13. Jack joined the Navy and upon his discharge bought his first second hand car and started a taxi business. He worked long and hard, overcoming adversity and became a multi-millionaire through his various business ventures.

in 1999 he established the Jack Petchey Foundations which has so far has given £118 million to support youth projects. Jack seeks to increase young people’s aspirations by rewarding their achievements and encouraging them to take pride in what they have done.

In 2012, Jack was awarded the CBE in recognition of his services to young people. More than anything he believes that people should think of others and give back to society, no matter how small an act of kindness of generosity, he wants young people to know that in giving, you also receive and the world is a better place for it!

Belfairs are proud to be part of such a fantastic scheme that recognises the achievements and challenges that our students are presented with throughout school and young adult life. As a result we would like to share the successes of our students through the Jack Petchey award scheme and acknowledge those who are facing challenging circumstances and overcoming barriers, and excellence either in school or outside in the community.

We have 9 awards per academic year, where our college captains and ambassadors meet monthly and choose a winner from student nominations. The winner is then announced in assemblies and receives a special Jack Petchey certificate and pin badge as well as £300 to spend in a department of their choice. So far this academic year winners have purchased rugby kits, PE sporting equipment, first aid teaching recourses, a wildlife camera and litter pickers for our eco club as well as a computer programme for coding club.

Every year all winners are invited to attend, alongside their family and friends, to a celebration event at The Palace Theatre, along with other schools in the community where they are presented with a medallion by a representative from the Jack Petchey Foundation.

What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?

A life-changing experience. A fun time with friends. An opportunity to discover new interests and talents. A tool to develop essential skills for life and work. A recognised mark of achievement; respected by employers. The DofE is many things to many people, supporting generations to successfully navigate adult life.

14–24-year-olds can do a DofE programme at one of three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, leads to a Bronze, Silver, or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. There are four sections to complete at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold. They involve helping the community/environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning, training for and completing an expedition and, for Gold only, working with a team on a residential activity.

Any young person can do their DofE – regardless of ability, gender, background, or location. Achieving an Award isn’t a competition or about being first. It’s all about setting personal challenges and pushing personal boundaries. Through a DofE programme young people have fun, make friends, improve their self-esteem, and build confidence. They gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team-working, communication, and drive, enhancing CVs and university and job applications. Top employers recognise the work-ready skills Award holders bring to their business.

DofE at Belfairs

At Belfairs Academy, we offer the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Bronze level. Meaning that any pupil from Year 9 will have the opportunity to register and complete the award. Belfairs has run a Duke of Edinburgh for several years extremely successfully and look forward to welcoming many more participants in the coming years.

The ‘Expedition’ Section

This year, Belfairs has partnered with Lambourne End Activity Centre to complete the Bronze Award’s Expedition section. The dates for each year’s Training Day and 2 Day expedition are approved in advance of the initial recruitment and will be included in letters sent home to all year 9 parents at the start of the academic year. Please click HERE for further information regarding kit that Lambourne End Activity Centre provides, the qualifications of their staff, and the approximate costs of the expedition sections (prices vary for each level of award).

DofE beyond Belfairs

As we only offer D of E Bronze level awards, participants are encouraged to complete the award at Silver and Gold levels elsewhere. The best place to visit if you want to continue your Duke of Edinburgh journey after Bronze is the Southend Open Group. Please do not hesitate to contact them with any queries regarding Silver and Gold Awards.
